Montana Supreme Court Reinstates Election Integrity Laws

HELENA, Mont. – In a 4-1 ruling, a five-judge panel of the Montana Supreme Court granted Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen’s appeal of a preliminary injunction issued by liberal activist judge Michael Moses that prevented Montana’s new election integrity laws from going into effect ahead of the June 7th primary. The ruling will prevent Election Day voter registration and require all voters to produce a valid form of ID before voting in person. In response to the ruling, Montana Republican Party Chairman Don “K” Kaltschmidt released the following statement:“The Supreme Court made the right decision in reinstating Montana’s common sense election integrity laws that make it easier to vote and harder to cheat,” Chairman Kaltschmidt said. “The election laws our legislature passed should not be a partisan fight, but unfortunately the Montana Democrats were able to count on their friend Michael Moses in the district court to strike them down. Thankfully, Secretary Jacobsen continued her strong record of standing up for election integrity and was able to get these laws back on the books for now.”In the ruling, the Justices sided with Secretary Jacobsen due to the fact that elections had already been conducted under the new laws and it was important to “preserve the status quo”.Following the ruling, voters in Montana must have registered to vote before noon on the day prior to the election. Also, college student ID’s are no longer a sufficient form of voter ID. Valid forms of voter ID now include: Montana drivers license, Montana state ID, Military ID, Tribal photo ID, US passport, or a Montana concealed carry permit.
