Some nursing home and care facilities are taking advantage of seniors and some of our more vulnerable citizens, claiming the facilities are entitled to individuals’ Economic Impact Payments.

The direct payments, which the federal government sent to all Americans in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, belong to the recipients – not the care facilities.

The Internal Revenue Service recently alerted nursing homes and care facilities that the Economic Impact Payments generally belong to the recipients, not the organizations providing care.

According to the IRS,

“The payments are intended for the recipients, even if a nursing home or other facility or provider receives the person’s payment, either directly or indirectly by direct deposit or check. These payments do not count as a resource for purposes of determining eligibility for Medicaid and other federal programs for a period of 12 months from receipt. They also do not count as income in determining eligibility for these programs.”
