Recognizing a trailblazing Montanan
On May 21, 1919, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a measure that would become the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, giving women the right to vote.
The first woman elected to Congress, Montana’s own Jeannette Rankin was a pioneering champion for women’s suffrage and instrumental in the Nineteenth Amendment’s passage.
I recently recognized Jeannette Rankin and her historic accomplishments on the House floor.
To honor her lasting contributions to our country, I introduced legislation to name a Missoula post office after her.

Moving forward with Little Shell Tribe recognition
The Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians is one step closer to federal recognition after the U.S. House passed the Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians Restoration Act which I re-introduced in January.
This momentum is promising, particularly since I was able to lead it to passage in September 2018 during the 115th Congress. Now it’s time for the Senate to act.
The bill restores the Tribe’s long overdue federal recognition and allows it to purchase 200 acres of land to serve as its reservation.
The Little Shell began petitioning the federal government for recognition in the 1930s. I appreciate the dedication and determination of Chairman Gerald Gray and the Little Shell people. We look forward to seeing this bill pass the Senate and go to President Trump.

Spirit of Montana
I had the honor of recognizing Justin Downs of Molt for his selfless service to his community. Justin came to the aid of an injured rancher in hostile winter conditions, when snow-drifted roads and fields prevented emergency vehicles from reaching him.
