During the last week of January, the unemployment numbers for Montana were released. Montana’s unemployment rate hit a new record low this past December, dropping another 0.3 percentage points to end the year at 2.5%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The number of unemployed Montanans is at its lowest level since BLS began the data series in 1976. To read more click here.

“After just one year, our Montana Comeback Plan is working. Our unemployment rate is the lowest it’s ever been, and more Montanans are working than ever before. With lower taxes and responsible, responsive government, our economy is going again, we’re open for business, and Montanans are back to work.”– Gov. Gianforte
In the middle of the month, Governor Gianforte sent an open letter to Montana’s health care professionals. The governor thanked them for their work and dedication, particularly amid the pandemic, and urged those who are unvaccinated to consider options to remain in the workforce ahead of a looming deadline for President Biden’s vaccination mandate for health care workers. At Governor Gianforte’s direction, the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services last month designed and published a template form for unvaccinated employees who seek a religious exemption. Governor Gianforte also announced his opposition to a proposed revision to the Montana Professional Educator Code of Ethics that will incorporate “equity” into Montana schools. The governor also underscored Montana law which prohibits advisory councils, such as CSPAC, from setting policy. The governor’s letter can be viewed here.

“This would do a grave disservice to the students who should, and must, come first. Their interests must come before any politically motivated interests that will compromise their education.”– Gov. Gianforte
